Power Point locations and sinks

The first thing to consider is whether the sink's water capacity is less than 45 Litres as there are different rules depending on the capacity.

45 Litre or Less Sink

The diagram above demonstrates the positioning of power points so they comply with regulations for sinks with less than 45L capacity, with a fixed tap:

  • Power points must be a minimum of 150mm from the edge of the water container (i.e bathroom sink). AND
  • Power points must be a minimum height of 400mm above the top of the water container. AND
  • Power points must be prtotected by a safety switch not exceeding 30mA.

Conductor of electricity

Water is a great conductor of electricity, which can be very dangerous in places like the bathroom. There are certain rules and regulations in Australia that govern how switches and outlets can be placed in relation to water outlets and fixtures.

If you have any doubt about where things should go, consult a licensed electrician. A licensed electrician must be employed to do any electrical work.
